"The wrong way! You went in a huge circle, I can't believe it!"
The familiar laughter reached 9's sensors and he opened his optics, sighing in annoyance. He was having his recurring dream again. The one where he talked to his old friends.
The spirit of 1 seemed to be taking delight in the schadenfreude of the situation. 9 had never seen him so elated. Their old leader was doubled over with laughter, and 8 was joining in with his own booming baritones.
"It's really not that funny ..." 5 stepped forward and placed a ghostly green hand on 9's shoulder. "I'm sorry, 9. Maybe you could have done with a map?"
"'Maybe' is a little too late right now I'm afraid, 5." 9 shot 1 and 8 a stern look as they began to calm down. "But I am putting things right."
"Going to lead them in a circle in the other direction?" 8 snickered.
9 ignored the laughing Stitchpunks as they turned away, disappearing into the inky black emptiness of his dream and leaving only 5, 2 and 6 for company.
"Don't worry, my boy." 2 tried to stand up straight, a little rickety. "Youll find a way around it. I knew you had that spark in you, from the moment I first laid eyes on you."
"Good luck." 5 reassured his friend and beckoned for them to follow him again. 2 did so, but 6 lingered back, waiting until they were out of earshot before turning to 9 and placing his ink-covered hands on his shoulders.
"Don't, don't worry 9. You're on the right path. Y-you're close!"
"Close?" He blinked. "Close to what?"
6 simply smiled, and his face faded from view, which meant only one thing to 9 ...
